Your NeverEnding Story
#33 Writing Tips & Tricks
“Story is metaphor for life and life is lived in time.” - Robert McKee
(My debut book, the lyrical, mischievous, adult fairytale set in Manchester, is now available for preorder before it’s launch on 14th February out into the world. Please do purchase it and I’d love to know what you thought X Thank you for your support)
Stories are a telling and perhaps retelling of our steps. Think about it. if we never moved, then there’d be no story. I’m sure that someone simply sat and doing absolutely fuck-all over the course of 300 pages wouldn’t be such a remarkable read. If you disagree with me, then go ahead and write it. I look forward to reading what you wrote.
No. stories happen because our characters choose to do something. Or say something. Or impact the space around them in some ways that it affects what happens next. It makes us turn the page to find out more.
Our lives are a creative process in action. Our lives are unfolding moment by moment. Word by word. Time by time.
It’s only in hindsight that we can grab the pen and tell of it. sometimes with great acquiescence to the truth. At other times using great liberty with the details of the story. That’s the beauty to writing. We hold the pen, so we control the world on the page.
So, if you want to write a great story you have to get out there and live.
Make things happen to you.
Or, let life make you happen.
It’s all one grand adventure after all.
Question: What is the metaphor of the story of your life? Can you discover it? What kind of story are you telling?
